'First Stop' Advice for Older People

If you are an older person or a relative or carer of an older person, and need help on care, housing, finance or rights, there is a telephone and online informaton service called FirstStop you can tap into. The service, provided jointly by Counsel and Care, Elderly Accommodation Counsel, Age Concern and Help the Aged and NHFA (previously the Nursing Home Fees Agency) Lines are open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm 0800 377 7070 or go to www.firststopadvice.org.uk
 

Health Rights Information Scotland - Caring and Consent Information/

Be ICE cool in an emergency

The Ambulance Service is encouraging us to have an ‘in case of emergency’ or ‘ICE’ number stored in our mobile phones.  Having an ICE number will allow paramedics to contact your emergency contact in the event on an emergency.  For more than one contact name, simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.  

Guidance For Carers In Managing The Finances Of Someone With Incapacity

The Mental Welfare Commission Scotland has produced a guide to managing the finances of an adult with incapacity.  This has been written in partnership with the Office for the Public Guardian (OPG) due to concerns about the welfare impact on those who lack the capacity to manage their own finances.  The Guide entitled 'Money Matters' offers guidance on what carers and professionals can do to help.  The report can be found at http://www.mwcscot.org.uk/nmsruntime/saveasdialog.asp?lID=1486&sID=742.  Alternatively, contact Amy at the Carers Centre for paper copy.

 

Child Poverty Action Group Handbook

The Child Poverty Action Group has produced a handbook aimed at helping those who are working with children and families in Scotland covering welfare rights and benefits for disabled children and their families.  Visit www.cpag.org.uk

 

Respite News from Shared Care

Shared Care Scotland has developed an online Short Break Planning Pack to help people be more in control of their short break service. The guidance and information in the resource will help people understand what is available or possible, in order that they get the break they need. Paper copies of the pack are available from Amy at the Carers Centre (0141 423 8557) on request.

Shared Care Internet Newsletter has a lot of useful information on respite/short breaks, such as news on the new Scottish Government Carers Strategy, the reconvening of a Short Break Task Group to look at the reach and impact of current provision in Scotland and the announcement that Saga is seeking nominations of unpaid carers in over 50 bracket to be considered for a holiday opportunity.
